Sarasota
County, already a training ground for athletes from around the
world, is becoming one of the premier rowing destinations in
North America. The development of Nathan Benderson Park has
received the support of the
Sarasota Convention and Visitors Bureau
and rowing enthusiasts from around
the world. The beautiful park and rower’s paradise hosted its
first regattas in 2009; Florida Intercollegiate Rowing
Association State Championships and the 44th Annual Florida
Scholastic Rowing Association State Championships, attracting
more than 10,000 spectators and participants. Since 2009, the
regattas and various recreational events have only grown in
success and popularity.
Competitive rowing is one of the hottest amateur sports in the
country and Sarasota County’s Nathan Benderson Park is quickly
gaining a stellar reputation in the rowing community. The
Sarasota County Commission has approved the concept plan and
preliminary design plan to build one of the most advanced rowing
venues in the country. Design and engineering for the park is
now underway through a public/private partnership with the
Benderson Development Corporation. The 2012 rowing season
promises to be another very exciting season. Some of the best
amateur athletes from across the country will once again come to
Sarasota County to battle for the gold.
