Sarasota County Libraries celebrate ‘2012
Library of the Year’ Award |
When it comes to library systems in the state of
Florida, the Sarasota County Library System is the best of the best. On Friday,
the Sarasota County Library System was presented with the Florida Library
Association’s (FLA) “2012 Library of the Year” award at the association’s annual
conference in Orlando.
The Sarasota County Library System was recognized for demonstrating outstanding
service to the community, creativity and innovation in programming, expansion
and enhancement of service and leadership in implementing programs that can be
emulated by other libraries.
Accomplishments recognized by the FLA in presenting the award included:
• The creation of a new Teen Center at Selby Library.
• The opening of the Osprey Library at Historic Spanish Point.
• The creation of the Library Foundation of Sarasota County.
• The success of the One Book, One Community and the Read it and Pass it on
programs.
• The success of the Sarasota County Library System Floating Collection program.
In Sarasota County 70% of residents own a library card and 96% have said
libraries are last place they would look for budget cuts. “Sarasota County
libraries are valued by our community because they continue to offer programs
and services that can help make people’s lives better,” said Sarabeth Kalajian,
General Manager, Sarasota County Library System.
Sarasota County has nine library locations that more than 2.5 million customers
each year.
