Residents and Business Owners
Sarasota County Utilities utilizes the CodeRED Notification System - an ultra high-speed telephone
communication service for emergency notifications.
CodeRED
delivers the important message through a high-speed telephone
calling system to all phone numbers on the CodeRED database.
Sarasota County staff will access CodeRED via a secure portal on
the web. A call area will be marked identifying street addresses
on a map. Telephone numbers will be matched up electronically to
these addresses through the use of the Geographical Information
Systems (GIS). A pre-recorded message will be sent out via the
telephone with information about the incident and possibly
instructions for action to be taken. This system can call your
cell phone number if you register your cell phone number in the
CodeRED database.
Uses
This system allows us to send critical communications to all or
targeted areas within the county in case of a situation that requires immediate action. This system is capable
of dialing the entire county within minutes. It delivers a
recorded message from Sarasota County describing the situation
and any instructions for immediate or future action. The message
will play when answered by a live person or an answering machine
and makes three attempts to connect to each number. If you opt
in for text message and/or email alerts in the CodeRED database,
those will also be sent.
Caller ID
The calling number will display 866-419-5000. To hear the last
message delivered, simply dial the number back.
Privacy
Your contact information remains private and will only be used
for critical communications.
This system will ONLY be used for PUBLIC HEALTH, SAFETY and
WELLNESS
purposes.
Examples of times when the CodeRED system could
be utilized:
- Drinking water contamination,
- extended utility
outages,
- evacuation notice and route,
- missing person,
- fires,
floods, bomb threat, hostage situation, chemical spill or gas
leak, and other incidents where rapid and accurate notification
is essential for life safety.
Verizon provides published and unpublished telephone numbers for
EMERGENCY USE ONLY. You will not receive a notification call if you have any of the following
situations:
- Your phone service is not
provided by Verizon (including Verizon cellular service)
- You reside or work in a
complex (such as condominium, hotel, office building) where
there is a master switch for an internal phone system
- You only have a cellular
phone, including all wireless carriers
- You have a telephone
answering system that does any of the following:
- Does not record messages
that have a pause in the greeting
- Does not record messages
that asks the caller to press any key to hear the
important message
- Does not record
automated messages
- Does not record messages
from unknown callers or toll free numbers
To ensure that the calls reach
residents and utility users, accurate and up-to-date information
is essential.
Registration
The following information is required to add a telephone number
into the CodeRED database:
- first and last name; physical
address; city; state; zip code; and primary phone number.
A
primary phone number is most likely the identified home phone
number. The items identified above can create gaps in the
notification process. In order to avoid these gaps, it is
essential that customers visit the CodeRED database and update
their contact information. While the primary number identified
in the database is most like the home phone number, this number
is subject to the conditions listed above.
By visiting the CodeRED registration
webpage, customers can verify their home
number and enter an alternate phone number, such as a mobile
phone, can also be entered and both the primary and alternate
line will be contacted in the event of a critical event. The system
works with cellular phones but requires a Sarasota County street
address.
For those who are hearing impaired, the sign up form offers a TDD ONLY option for tone delivery of
critical messages.
Messages delivered to phone numbers marked TDD will only be
delivered in a TDD/TTY format.
For those without Internet
access, computers are available at the Sarasota County Public
Library allow you to access the Sarasota County website to
register.
To add or change a phone number, including cell phones, or opt
for the text message and/or email alerts, visit the CodeRED registration page and enter your information.
